SILKIN MANAGEMENT GROUP: Recent Survey Results on Small Business Growth in this Economy

by Silkin Management Group on November 23, 2011

Most Silkin Management Group clients are growing at rate exceeding the majority of their peers because they have been educated in workable practice management systems that put them at cause over their business operation. Silkin Management Group clients, all professionals such as dentists, veterinarians and optometrists, were trained in their profession, but rarely or never in how to run a small business. The Silkin program fills in that educational gap and results in growth, even during these tough economic times.

Many small businesses, though, are not experiencing growth. And, with the failure of the Congressional “Super Committee” to come up with a deficit reduction plan, a greater uncertainty has entered the economic picture. A recent survey of small businesses by the NFIB (National Federation of Independent Business) reveals the following:

• 72% of small business owners want to add employees within the next 5 years. 18% don’t want to add at all and 6% want to contract.

• 24% of the above 72% said their employee growth would come from adding previously lost positions.

• 61% said that lack of skilled employees is getting in the way of hiring. At Silkin Management Group we teach our clients how to find good potential employees and how to train them into the skills needed.

• The two biggest impediments to growth are business uncertainty (which hasn’t done anything but get worse with the failure of the “Super Committee”) and poor sales. Poor sales comes from a tepid economy.

• 53% of the business owners surveyed said that getting loans from banks is hampering expansion.

• 63% of those surveyed said that government regulations and paperwork affects their bottom line.

One can see from this that the low faith in the economy and our elected officials is definitely affecting the views of small business owners on their ability to grow in this economic environment. As noted above, most Silkin Management Group clients are growing, despite the economy. They are growing because they have learned effective practice management skills that, when applied, result in expansion.
